Shattered Dreams

December 30, 2010

Undocumented UCLA student

See her tears. Feel the years of striving to complete a college education that would enable her to fully contribute her talents to this country’s great needs.  Know the despair of young people raised in a country they call home but which shatters their dreams and rejects them.
The DREAM Act (Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act) was recently rejected by the Senate. It offered “conditional permanent residency” to undocumented young people brought to the United States illegally as minors by their parents if they went to college or into the military.  The legislation passed the House; the Senate was 5 votes short. Immigration Bill Fails

The nasty truth is that we want immigrants (of any color but white) kept in their place – meaning subservient to our needs. Exhausted in an apple field picking our fruit for low pay – okay.  Gaining an education that gives power?  Not so okay.  Becoming a citizen and voting? Way too much loss of control.

All the rhetoric in the world can’t hide the fact that those of us who hold power want to keep it that way.

And piece by piece, the dream of a more just and humane world disappears, shattered by our narrow mindedness, bigotry, and fear.
